A Little About Me

Hi, I'm Robert, the founder and crew boss of Green Mile Detasseling. When my mentor Eric, who ran Heartland Detasseling, decided to retire in 2021, he asked me to carry on the tradition of leading a unique crew that hires adult detasselers, works in the Whiting region, and offers piece rate compensation. I was honored to accept this responsibility and continue the legacy.

My journey in detasseling began in 2005 when I joined Eric's crew at the age of 21. As a "roller," I learned the value of hard work, jumping into the field at the start of the day and grabbing blocks until the field was completed. The competitive drive to do as much as possible gave me a deep understanding of what it takes to be a successful detasseler. While I excelled in the fields, I'm still learning the nuances of leading people and being an effective crew boss.

What I love most about detasseling is the opportunity to earn good money while staying active, getting a sun tan, and keeping in shape. More importantly, I cherish the relationships I've built over the years with the crew members who return each season. Suffering and laughing together, we form a strong bond as we work towards the shared accomplishment of completing another year of detasseling.

Running a 10-bedroom Bed and Breakfast in Helena, AR, has allowed me to meet people from all over the world and forge meaningful friendships. Combined with my experience as a data specialist for a school district, I've developed strong administrative skills and a knack for connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.

As a crew boss, I lead from the front. I would never ask my crew to do something I wouldn't do myself. I believe in experiencing the toughest conditions alongside my team and working through them together. My leadership style is centered around supporting the growth and success of each individual crew member.
